Belarus - where is it?

In the centre of Europe, between Poland, Russia, Lithuania and Ukraine there is a wonderful land, which from of old has been called White Russia. It is a land of blue rivers and lakes, a country of a quiet thoughtful nature. It is inhabited by one of the most ancient Slavonic nation with its unique history and cultural heritage.

Who are we?

The National Dance Company of Belarus is the leading choreographic collective of the Republic. It was created 45 years ago and has grown since then into the best professional company of the Republic of Belarus. In October 1999, by the decision of the Government of the Republic the Company was awarded the title of the Honoured Collective of the Republic of Belarus.

Artistic Director - who is he?

During the last eighteen years Professor Valentin Doudkevich, People's Artist of Belarus, heads the Company. For him the folklore arts mean a way of preservation of historical traditions, which are interconnecting generations. A synthesis of folklore with the best achievements of the world choreography makes both the creative credo of Valentin Doudkevich as a ballet-master, and the most precise definition of the contents of the programme of the National Dance Company.

Repertoire - what are we dancing?

The repertoire of the Company comprises several big concert programmes, which include traditional Belarusian and genre dances: the never-fading "Lyavonikha", the comic "Quadrilles on Stools", the women's ritual roundelay "Ternitsa", the men's dance "Village Festival", the dance of lovers "Areli", the rhythmic dance "Trample", and also the dances of other nations inhabiting Belarus: the Gypsy, Jewish dances, the Ukrainian dance "Gopak", the Russian dance "In Broad Street" and others.

What is new in our art?

In its productions of the latest years the Company has created choreographic performances with dramatic development in the genre of "folk-ballet". The lyrical dance "Song of Oak-Woods", the picture from city life "Vecharyna", performances on historic topics "Yefrosinya" and the "Polonaise" are the brightest concert items of this genre.

The Company - who performs all that?

The implementation by the Company of new performances is possible due to a young, beautiful and talented troupe, which is nicely trained both in the theatrical and choreographic aspects. The troupe comprises professionals - graduates of the State Choreographic College of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian State Conservatory.

The concerts of the National Dance Company of the Republic of Belarus are charming the audience by amazing colours of the costumes, beautiful tunes, masterly tricks and hot-tempered performance of the dances. The mastery of the actors has more than once been applauded in China and the United States, Italy and France, Spain and Brazil, in Germany, India, Sri Lanka, Yugoslavia, Holland, Egypt and other countries.

The press of these countries has been always highly appraising the professional and artistic level of the concerts of the Honoured Collective of the Republic of Belarus - the National Dance Company of Belarus.
